Lubbock-Cooper ISD announced Wednesday that student teachers enrolled in Texas Tech University's TechTeach program who complete their residency in the district have the opportunity to receive $20,000 to cover living expenses during their residency year. The funds are provided by the Texas COVID Learning Acceleration Supports (TCLAS) Program grant received by LCISD for the purpose of developing strong educator pipelines between the school district and local universities. The three-year grant will benefit student teachers through the 2023-24 school year. "We at Lubbock-Cooper consider teachers to be our most valuable resource," said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Macy Satterwhite. "These are the individuals we entrust with our children. They are the boots on the ground, in the classrooms day in and day out, and the success of our school district is the direct result of the love and tireless efforts of our teachers." Dr. Satterwhite went on to explain that historically, student teachers receive no pay during their residency year, and are often unable to hold outside jobs. "Teaching is so rewarding, and sometimes very taxing," said Satterwhite. "It requires such dedication and sacrifice from an individual, mentally, physically, emotionally, and - during the residency year - financially." The district hopes that by providing funding to help cover living expenses, individuals interested in the teaching profession will have the financial security and desire to pursue a career in education. This is also a way for the district to recruit many high quality candidates who wish to remain in the Lubbock area. To qualify for the full funding amount, student teachers must complete their teacher certification program through Texas Tech University. Student teachers may also be asked to perform additional duties relating to their residency, including tutoring services. Student teachers who are hired by the district following their residency year will also be eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus. Mentor teachers, veteran educators who partner with the district to welcome student teachers into their classrooms, will also receive an annual stipend of $2,000 through the grant.
