On this day in 1836, delegates representing Texas settlers adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence. Among several reasons for separation, early Texans cited the lack of a public school system.
"...it is an axiom in political science, that unless a people are educated and enlightened, it is idle to expect the continuance of civil liberty, or the capacity for self government."
We are so grateful for the early Texans who helped ensure the residents of our state have access to public education and so much more! Happy Texas Independence Day!
